Pediatric Dentistry Treatments in Toronto
Helping your child with good dental habits while they’re young can greatly improve their dental health in the future.Take a look below at our common treatments for children, and let us know if you have any questions about these procedures.
Dental Cleanings and X-rays
Hygiene appointments are encouraged for children as young as 2 years old or when old enough to undergo fluoride treatments. During these appointments we perform an initial evaluation of your child’s oral health, and take safe, x-ray images of their smile, which allows us to track the eruption of baby and adult teeth in your child and keep an eye for warning signs of oral disease. It’s quite common for children to be exposed to tooth decay, so we work hard to make sure that it doesn’t occur or worsen.
Fluoride Treatments and Sealants
Speaking of tooth decay and oral diseases, one of the top prevention methods is fluoride treatment and sealants. Fluoride is an element that can strengthen the enamel around your teeth. In addition, a sealant is an artificial method that puts a protective coating around the tooth to block it from bacteria. A combination of these treatments can protect teeth against tooth decay, bacteria, and more.
Fillings
Children may not always realize that their mouths are hurting, so it’s important that a dentist inspect their smile during these routine visits. When a tooth has become damaged due to decay, you can feel sharp pain or temperature sensitivity around the tooth. You may start to notice deep, dark pockets and pits on the center of your tooth. Before this damage can worsen, it’s recommended that your child undergo fillings to stop decay in its tracks. Fillings are tooth-coloured resins that are placed into these dark pits and pockets to seal them. If more extensive protection is needed, it may be recommended that a crown be placed over the filling as well. This will be determined by your doctor.
Early Orthodontic Care
Studies have shown that making a good first impression with a straight smile can leave a lasting impression on someone you’ve just met. In addition, straighter teeth could make it easier for patients to clean and maintain their smiles at home, instilling good dental habits. Here at Park Dental, we believe that patients should consider orthodontics to help straighten their smile, no matter what age they are. If your child or teen has misaligned teeth, talk to us about their candidacy for orthodontics.
