The first job of an emergency visit is to settle the pain. Once you are comfortable, we look at what caused it and talk through your options. Many people worry that emergency treatment will hurt. We use local freezing to keep you comfortable during care and we tell you what to expect at each step.

Severe toothache

Throbbing or constant pain that will not settle, often a sign of infection or nerve damage.

Broken or chipped tooth

A cracked, broken, or sharp tooth after a knock, a fall, or biting something hard.

A tooth pushed out or loosened by an injury. This is time-critical, so call right away.

Abscess, swelling, or infection

Facial swelling, a gum bump, or a bad taste. Infection can spread and should not wait.

Lost filling or crown

What to do until you reach us

Call us first. While you are on the way, these steps can protect the tooth and ease the pain. They do not replace treatment.

Situation	What to do right now
Knocked-out adult tooth	Pick it up by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently with water without scrubbing. If you can, place it back in the socket and hold it there. If not, keep it in milk or in your cheek and get to us fast.
Broken or chipped tooth	Rinse your mouth with warm water. Save any pieces in milk or saliva. Hold a cold compress against your cheek to bring down swelling.
Severe toothache	Rinse with warm water and floss gently to clear any trapped food. Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed. Hold a cold compress on the outside of your cheek. Avoid heat on the area.
Swelling or abscess	Rinse with warm salt water and use a cold compress on your cheek. Do not press or drain it yourself. If swelling spreads to your eye or neck, or you have a fever, treat it as urgent.
Lost filling or crown	Keep the crown if you have it. Keep the area clean and avoid chewing on that side. Sugar-free gum can cover a sharp edge for a short time until we see you.
Bitten lip or tongue	Clean the area gently and press with a clean cloth to slow the bleeding. Use a cold compress for swelling. If bleeding does not stop, go to a hospital.

These steps are first aid, not a substitute for seeing a dentist. Call us and come in as soon as you can.

Emergency dental FAQs

Can I be seen the same day?

In most cases, yes. We hold same-day slots for dental emergencies such as broken teeth, severe pain, lost crowns, and trauma. Call in the morning and we will do our best to fit you in that day.

Do you take walk-ins?

Call first if you can, even a few minutes ahead. It lets us have a room and a dentist ready when you arrive, which is faster than walking in and waiting.

Are you open on weekends?

Yes. Our Bloor Street West clinic is open seven days a week, including Saturday and Sunday, so you can be seen for an emergency on the weekend.

Are you open 24 hours?

We are not a 24 hour clinic. If you have an emergency during our hours, call us for a same-day appointment. After hours, follow the first-aid steps above, keep the area clean, and call us as soon as we open. If you have heavy bleeding, trouble breathing, or a serious injury, go to a hospital.

Can you do an emergency tooth extraction the same day?

When a tooth is too damaged or infected to save, we can often remove it and settle the pain the same day. We always look first at whether the tooth can be kept before we remove it.

Will the treatment hurt?

We use local freezing to keep you comfortable during emergency care, and we explain each step before we do it. The first goal of the visit is to get you out of pain.

Do you bill my insurance directly?
